Audi Geelong Week Presentation day Update.

This Sunday 21^st February the trophy presentations will be held at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club at approx 1.00pm. To assist those living in Melbourne RGYC are providing buses that would operate from SYC, RBYC, RMYS and RYCV. In addition their will be a full buffet lunch available at RGYC for all those attending at a cost of $30 per person. Bookings for lunch and the bus are essential. The Geelong Taxi Network Multihull Series, part of Audi Victoria Week, was decided yesterday afternoon, but final results were kept top secret until last night’s prize giving when Geoff Floyd, thinking he’d finished second, was called up as the overall winner of the eight-race series with his Corsair Sprint 750 called Chilli.

Floyd, sailing for the Hastings Yacht Club in Victoria, finished on 16 points, two points clear of Peter Floyd’s Goldfinger (SA) and Tim Pepperell’s E-Marineworld Skips (Vic), both Farrier designs.

“We got off to a bad start on the first day, breaking some rigging followed by a poor second race, but we finished the regatta strongly with a win and a second yesterday, which got us over the line” said a delighted Floyd.

“I’ve been coming to Geelong for the past 20 years sailing on others boats and for the past two regattas my own, and this is my first win so it’s pretty special.

“Last year the boat was new to us and we were still getting used to it. This year we bought some new sails and gathered up a good crew and it’s paid off for us.

“We had great racing with [second placed] Goldfinger; they are a bigger boat and it’s always pleasing to be close to them on the course,” added Floyd.

Commenting on the overall series the winning skipper is delighted with the regatta standard of competition and the camaraderie that exists amongst the multi-hull fleet of 11 representing Victoria and South Australia.

“The quality of the fleet is great, the competition was really close, and everyone had a lot of fun. We all meet up after racing, it’s not a huge fleet but everyone enjoys getting together.”

Most other divisions are still in the thick of their competition, with many results expected to go down to the wire in tomorrow’s deciding races while for the multihulls, their competition wrapped up yesterday after six days on the water.

The class had a head start on the extensive Audi Victoria Week racing program; their first race commenced last Tuesday at Geelong before the fleet raced to Melbourne and back again with Saturday’s huge Passage Race fleet.

The Geelong Taxi Network Multi-Hull Series is one of the many class battles that make up Audi Victoria Week which is being hosted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club for the 166th year.

At the last committee meeting we resolved to hold General meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of even months and informal Social meetings on the 2nd Friday of odd months.. So, the 1st social of the year is Friday 15th (I thought the 8th was too soon..). Tim will chose the venue and publish it soon

Audi Victoria Week - December Update

Welcome to the final edition of the Audi Victoria Week newsletter for 2009.

As everyone winds down for the Christmas/New Year break, we'll be firing up to finalize things for the event which is only 34 days away!

On the sailing front, entries are steadily flowing in with 130 to date. Sailing Administrator Rob Hampshire is anticipating yet another big regatta, "At this stage we are on track for record numbers," he said.

He is encouraging everyone to get their entries in before the cut off on 6th January. All entries must be finalized by midnight on the 6th to avoid paying an additional $95 in late fees. Late entries will be accepted up until midnight on the 13th January and will incur the $95 fee.

Don't wait, enter here now!

The Sailing Instructions will be available early January from the website and the mooring plans will also be available on the site shortly.

As in previous years the skippers packs will be available for collection from the Docklands regatta office or Geelong, further details will be in the sailing instructions.

The entertainment program has been locked away with an exciting mix of musicians and a host of roving performers, read on for more details.

It is with deep regret that I feel the need to write to you in relation to the status of our membership base at our yacht club.

As you are all well aware, a club is made up of members, paid up members. At the moment the MYCV has about 12 of them. It is hard to believe that we are the oldest Yacht Club in Victoria and yet the smallest in membership base. Anyone who races regularly, needs a Silver Card from Yachting Victoria. The MYCV is the cheapest way to achieve this.

Unfortunately at our current membership level, it is not sustainable for us to continue as a successful yacht club. The time has come. We now need to call on you all to respond and become paid up members.

It’s as easy as downloading a Membership Application form from the website, fax/email it and EFT payment straight into our bank account (all details are on the membership form). Alternatively, you can pay by cash or cheque to David Tapper on Monday 30^th November at Bells Hotel South Melbourne at our Christmas meeting/drinks. If you enjoy multihull racing, cruising, spending time with people who share the same interest, then lets start pushing to increase our membership base.

Multihulls at AVW Geelong 2010

The Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria (MYCV) in conjunction with Audi Victoria Week Principle Race Officer Denis Thompson, have organised an extended regatta starting on Tuesday 19^th of January 2010 through to Sunday 24^th of January 2010. The series will be staged predominately around fixed marks on Corio and Port Phillip Bay. There will be a combination of short and passage races which includes starting with the 350 plus fleet in the famous Melbourne to Geelong Race. Handicaps will be based on the OMR system and finalised before 6:30pm on Monday 18^th of January 2010. All yachts must apply with category 5 safety regulations.

Although we start and finish at RGYC, we will stay 3 nights at ‘Marina Yarras Edge’ situated up the Yarra River near the City. This will enable us to showcase Multihull sailing on the top end of the bay and incorporate the King of Docklands sail off which includes two multihull crews’ ‘e-marineworld skips’ and ‘Wilparina 2’. Come along and support your Multihull mates while attending the Audi Victoria Week party.

A formal dinner will be held on Tuesday 19^th of January at RGYC, at a cost of $25 per head. This year’s dinner was a great success and we are endeavouring to make 2010 even better.

Any crews, especially interstate boats, needing help with arrangements/logistics please contact the MYCV committee. The MYCV is committed in making this event the premier Multihull regatta in Australia, hence are proud to invite all racing and cruising multihull yachts to attend.

Well it’s that time of year again! And hasn’t the it gone fast? This year the last MYCV meeting for the year, will be a casual affair to catch up with sailing friends. There will be a brief chat about

The Nationals held at Hervey Bay in October and a report on SOMR and AVW progress. Kicks off at 7.30pm at Bells Hotel in the upstairs room. Finger food will be provided with drinks at bar prices.

Guest speaker is David Williamson, who sailed on Kookaburra in the America’s Cup 150th Jubilee Celebration in August 2001, held on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.

All the old Americas Cups yachts competed including Australia 2… Just hearing about the logistics of getting all these great boats back together is interesting, plus the meeting with

Dennis Conner and John Bertrand.

e-marineworld skips wins SOMR

‘e-marineworld Skips’ (formally Quickskips), a Farrier F9AX tri wins the ‘e-marineworld 2009, Southern Ocean Multihull Regatta’ (SOMR) held on Western Port in Victoria.

The crew of e-marineworld Skips, Tim Pepperell, Robin Reiger, Tony Holt and Gale Perry had a great time at SOMR, taking out line honours in all four races winning the prestigious Greyhound trophy. The regatta was held in light and fluky frustrating conditions except for the first reach in the first race. Tim Pepperell said “the first race was the most exciting of the series when sailing across to Joes Island, on a tight reach, holding our mast head kite was exciting when sticking it in several times going from 18 to 0 knots four times before we ran out of water and needed to drop the kite in a hurry”.

The four race series was hosted by the Hastings Yacht Club in-conjunction with the Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria. All races were tightly contested with the final handicap in both PHC & OMR results finishing the top 4 boats within 3 minutes of each other. After the wind dropped out again in the last race SOMR race control had no choice but to shorten course which had all of the fleet motoring back to the club for a pack up and get ready for the SOMR presentation dinner. On PHC all 3 place getters were Farrier tri’s and on OMR 2 Farriers and 1 corsair 31 filled the top spots.

SOMR Report

This years SOMR was once again hosted by Hastings Yacht Club. Whilst the fleet was smaller than hoped, some of the flamboyant personalities made it feel much larger..... and non more so than Mark Stafford, respectfully known as "Shreik", whose huge presence on the dance floor made the lead singer swoon....but more of that later...

This year we were sponsored by e-marineworld (does their logo remind you of pacman?)... Tim and Rob provided some nice new trophies and then went on to win most of them! I put it down to their new ace crew of "big" Tony Holt ably assisted (possibly controlled) by Gale Perry. They took Line honours in all four Races thus winning the inaugural Greyhound Trophy.

The regatta was held in light and fluky winds with the exception of the first race which was champagne sailing in near perfect reaching conditions along the top of Westernport. For the rest of the regatta your anchor was a strategic weapon to stop the tide taking one backwards in the frequent windless zones and those who used it wisely made good gains....sadly, the crew of Shuttle did not catch on and they were noted overtaking many boats going backwards on several occasions.... In spite of the conditions, all races were hotly contested with the top boats separated by no more than a minute or 2.

Shaun Fishley on Frassld continues to improve and we expect him to knock Skips off their top spot soon. He was 2nd overall on OMR. George Bulka had some exciting moments on Redshift and took out the PHC trophy. Probably not his best regatta and I put it down to him being distracted by his new baby Catamaran. You can never write off Leon and Rainbow Connection with a handicap to die for.... he should have won it all in the light conditions but found a few too many holes and ended up 3rd in both PHC and OMR. Jeff on Chilli had a ripper last race and was leading the pack until we realised he had missed out a mark.. this was easy to do in the windless conditions..Al on Mustang Sally was in cruising mode and training up a new crew.. fortunately for the rest of us they had not learnt to use the screacher so Al was down the field this time. That leaves Shreik on With Teeth....somehow, in the last race, he managed to not see a huge Channel Mark which was the first turning mark, and managed to wedge his tri onto it... made a lovely bell like sound and took him 5 minutes to free himself... for his efforts he won the Pigs Might Fly Trophy and the Zinta Trophy for the best boat breakage..Finally, the start boat... they did a great job as usual, but turned up with a start mark 18inches high that one could barely see. Fortunately, in the 3rd race it sunk, never to be retrieved... the gods were on our side that day....

The presentation Dinner on the Monday night was well catered and well supported by sailors and members of HYC. We had the same live band as in previous years and the lead singer certainly remembered Shreik for his on floor activities.

Many thanks to the HYC team lead by Josie, Ian Anderson as Race Officer and all competitors. I think running it on Cup weekend was probably not the wisest decision in hindsight, but a good time was had by all...

AGM - New Committee

Can't say the AGM was well attended but we did vote in a new committee. Tim Pepperell is our new Commodore so we can expect lots of activity, change and delegation! I am hopeful that his new responsibilities will detract from his performance on the water, but I am not holding my breath.... The rest of the team remain pretty much unchanged... Many thanks to Stuart as past commodore, he is staying on the committee as Rear to help keep us in shape...when the twins allow...

Plans for Audi Victoria week are well under way so SOMR is our immediate focus. The NOR will be published on the web site next week...thanks Ian...

The AVW committee have approved the following Multihull Program. They had safety concerns about the passage race to Mount Martha so we have swapped it for a passage race directly to Melbourne and 2 races around the top end of Port Phillip. We expect the celebrations in Docklands to be huge this year with a new main sponsor and a rebranding of the event, so it will good to be a more active part of it. We are expecting a fleet of 18 to 20 with new boats joining in from both SA and Vic... some support from up north would be the cherry on the top!!

HYC Race Report

Races 4 and 5 of the Hastings Yacht Club winter series have been well supported by the local Multihull fraternity. Race 4 started with a record 8 Tri's on the start line which bodes well for the future and speaks volumes for the support our division gets from HYC. At the front we had the glory boys on Quickskips and Redshift. In the middle Chilli, Frassld, Daylight Robbery and Mustang Sally, and bringing up the rear Shuttle and With teeth....so we all had someone to play with... Conditions were good with the wind slowly increasing to 20 knots as the race wore on. Sadly, Redshifts rudder failed for the umteenth time leaving Tim on Skips with just himself to play with. The course was a repeating Triangle in the main channel. The tide was ebbing strongly and with 27 mono's also racing on the same course, if you didnt judge it correctly the B35 top mark was challenging. In the end, Skips pipped Mustang Sally by 30 seconds on corrected time and Shuttle beat With Teeth for 3rd by 10 seconds.

Race 5 had 6 Tri's at the start with a forecast 25 knots. The Race Committee sent the fleet to Joes Island and back. Everyone had a single reef in at the start which proved to be a prudent decision as the beat back from Joes Island saw the wind getting towards 30 knots. George had fixed his Rudder and got off to a flying start in Redshift on the 1st leg which was a beat to B35. Al on Mustang Sally, complete with his all girl crew of 4, (how does he do it?) screamed after George using his screacher to good effect. Once past crawfish rock all the spinnakers were hoisted... well almost all as Quickskips seemed to be struggling with theirs and gave up after a while..I believe they had equipment failure.... The race back after the rounding was fun when the rain storm came through, but winds dropped a bit towards the end. The final result was a well deserved win for Redshift followed by Mustang Sally, Frassld, Daylight Robbery and Shuttle, all within 2 minutes of each other. Slowskips got the wooden spoon for a change..no doubt the crew will be flogged..
